Billy Budd heute
Stephan guckt in die Ferne und sieht die Sopranos beim Streiten, ob Herman Melville schwule Bücher schreibt:
Okay, es hat nicht wirklich mit Melville zu tun. Aber ich habe diese Episode gesehen, als ich bereits eine erhöhte Aufmerksamkeit für Melville hatte. Ich möchte für diese U.S.-amerikanische TV-Serie eine Lanze brechen, die im deutschen Fernsehen so schmählich behandelt wurde.
Like her son A.J. Carmela has also missed the homosexual subtext of Billy Budd when to subject had came up after A.J. revealed he got a grade “C” on the essay he wrote on it. A.J. said his teacher Mr. Wegler said that it was a homosexual book. Carmela denies it. When Meadow points out her error she is totally hostile to the idea and maintains that Billy Budd had nothing to do with homosexuality. Carmela becomes more miserable throughout the dinner and gets into an argument over the homosexual content of Billy Budd.
